Story overview

The film begins “2 months earlier”, a young women is in a library, reading a book. She then gets a phone call from her mother. Her mother tells her she needs to get home quickly because something is wrong, at first she just shrugs it off but as her mother sounds more panicked she asks what’s happening, then it cuts to 2 months later.
There is then a news broadcast explaining that there is a rising number of missing people, the news broadcast has very weak connection and keeps cutting off which it eventually does.

The young women (from the two months earlier) wakes up in the middle of nowhere with no memories of how she got there or who she is. She decides to explore her surroundings and reach civilisation only to find out that the majority of people have gone missing as everywhere she goes is deserted. As she walks around, she decides to try and find out what has happened so she walks around until she eventually comes across a band of people also confused of what has happened. They then explain that they are trying to uncover the conspiracy they believe has led to this disappearance of most of humanity. They all begin to share ideas on what they think has happened and discuss their own theories (while playing a game of poker), some more outlandish than others, ranging from aliens to the government. They then decide to bet on whose theory is correct with the small amount of possessions they have left. Driven by this they go out to look for more clues to prove themselves right, this leads to them twisting the meaning of the clues and stretching their significance to fit their own theories leading them further and further away from the truth. The girl, while trying to uncover the truth, starts experiences flashbacks of the horrific scenes she saw before everyone went missing. The flashback is of her running away and being pushed and shoved by a lot of people running away from something, she doesn't see exactly what they’re running from but she knows it isn't good. When she comes out of her flashback, she appears a bit disorientated, the rest of the group help her as she comes back to reality. She tells the group what she's just seen, this helps the group come closer to finding out what’s actually happening. The group keeps walking until its dark, they come into an abandoned city where shop windows are smashed and everything is run down, they decide to stay there for the night and light a fire to keep warm. When morning comes they carry on looking for clues, they then find a letter on the floor which they open and read, this is the clue that unlocks the secrets of what has happened. It turns out that due to overpopulation and the financial crisis the government has decided to try and lower populations any way they could. They follow an address they found on the letter to see if anyone is still alive so they can save them. By the time they get to the address, it's dark again, it's a posh looking neighbourhood, juxtaposes the previous town they was in, the street lights are on and lights in houses are on so they know something is strange and not right. They decided to knock on the door of the address and find that the people there are extremely shocked to see them, only the rich was supposed to survivor. The group is then taken captive and locked in a basement of which they try to escape. While they are there they learn that everyone else has been killed. Using a pocket knife the girl had hidden in her clothes they break free and manage to get to another abandoned town and start their own life again.
